Goku is the heart and soul of Dragon Ball, but one of the franchise's core themes has always been the idea that the next generation will surpass the last, and that it's only right to pass the torch onto the next generation. This is a concept Akira Toriyama introduces in the World Tournament Saga before fleshing out all throughout the rest of Dragon Ball and DBZ. Goku flying off with Uub to start training the next generation of fighters is a perfect full circle ending for Dragon Ball – and one that is ready to repeat itself.
Between the Dragon Ball anime, Toyotarou's manga, and even the video games, the franchise is ready to move on from Goku and embrace a new protagonist. While Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, which is set to premiere on October 11, will keep Goku in the spotlight for a few more months, new sagas and stories are pushing Goku aside to focus on characters who still haven't completed their arcs and journeys. Dragon Ball has realized that Goku is a fully formed character with few stories left to tell, making it time for a new protagonist.
Almost instantly once Dragon Ball Super 2 begins, it's going to be made very clear that this is Vegeta's story. Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is adapting the Moro Saga into an anime, which is an arc that gives Vegeta a lot of character development. He has to finally confront all the evil he committed on Namek, starts training on Yardrat to prove himself more talented than Goku, and even helps defeat Moro in a support capacity. Dragon Ball Super 2 will only continue to explore the idea that Vegeta is more important than Goku in both the Granolah the Survivor and Super Hero Sagas.
In the former, Vegeta has a great arc about accepting the evil the Saiyans committed (a perfect extension of his personal growth in the Moro Saga), while also unlocking Ultra Ego: a form that makes him as strong as Ultra Instinct Goku. In the Super Hero Saga, Vegeta officially defeats Goku and ends their decades-long rivalry, giving him closure and allowing him to move on – while also thematically tying into Dragon Ball's idea that there will always be someone better. For Vegeta, that used to be Goku. But for Goku, that's now Vegeta.
While Vegeta's going to dominate a lot of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol and the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Piccolo and Gohan are officially going to take over as the protagonists in the Super Hero Saga – and they will remain as such for the foreseeable future. As of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, Gohan and Piccolo are still more important than Goku and Vegeta narratively. Not only that, the manga' Super Hero Saga is much longer than Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
This means that Dragon Ball Super 2's adaptation of the Super Hero Saga will need to be multiple episodes long, pushing Goku and Vegeta to the sidelines for possibly an entire cour – if not entire season. Depending on how the Black Frieza Saga shakes out, Goku may not even get back in the spotlight. Broly still needs his own arc after joining the main cast following his movie, and Gohan is much stronger than Goku is currently, making them both better options to drive the final war with Frieza forward.
On the video game side of things, Dragon Ball Xenoverse is finally flashing the timeline forward to Age 1000. Interestingly, while the games are generally considered non-canon, Akira Toriyama's lore details for the Xenoverse games have been around since 2010 and don't necessarily contradict the main series (most of the time). Xenoverse 3 is flashing so far ahead in the future, however, with concept art and story contribution from Toriyama, that it may very well be the canon future for Dragon Ball.
