Fool's Theory, the development studio that was originally contracted to remake the first Witcher game, has changed trajectory over recent years.
While the majority of CD Projekt Red is currently working on The Witcher 4, Fool's Theory has been pouring its efforts into Songs of the Past — the surprise DLC for The Witcher 3, which is due out next year.
It's also been helping out with the aforementioned sequel, which is targeting a 2028 launch.
And so The Witcher's remake has effectively been put on ice until these upcoming projects are done.
Confirmation of this direction was sent to GameSpot, in a statement that outlines CD Projekt Red's plans to build the remake off the back of The Witcher 4.
"As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development," it reads.
Remember, The Witcher 4 marks the first time that the Polish company has moved away from its in-house REDengine — it's instead being made with Unreal Engine 5.
Taking all of this into account, then, we probably won't be seeing the long-promised remake until 2029 or so. Here's hoping that everything goes smoothly.
