As I was installing Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on my Nintendo Switch 2, I had two primary concerns:
That first concern is, admittedly, silly. Of course, Elden Ring still holds up as an incredible gaming experience that everyone needs to play. The second concern, however, is quite valid.
For as good as the Switch 2's third-party support has been, some games have felt poorly optimized. Oblivion Remastered, which I played immediately before Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, is filled with several notable issues, all of which deal with the game's performance. It's not the only Switch 2 port to suffer from this fate, either.
Thankfully, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition doesn't suffer from the same flaws. Yes, there are some (at times, obvious) limitations due to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, but ultimately, this is still the same Elden Ring experience we fell in love with four years ago. In fact, I'd argue that those restraints allow the Tarnished Edition to reach the heights it does.
Without a successful open world, Elden Ring doesn't succeed. Its ability to utilize boss difficulty as a way to encourage players to explore the rest of the map is a natural fit that stays true to the Soulslike genre. FromSoftware was courteous enough, too, to populate The Lands Between with plenty to see or do. Every time I play through the game, it feels like I'm finding something new.
Before I continue to lavish deserved praise on Elden Ring's open world, which has already been done plenty of times, let's not waste any more time. Elden Ring Tarnished Edition performs far better than I ever expected it to. Will it match Steam Deck performance? Absolutely not. It is, however, a well-put-together port that doesn't detract from the experience. Visually, the game doesn't compare to PC, PS5, or XBOX. Then again, I didn't need it to look as good. I just needed it to perform smoothly, and it absolutely does.
