To get a Love Novel for the town's guard captain in Graveyard Keeper 2, you'll need to complete a side quest involving the local looter gang and a man named Davy, whom you'll find inside the Dockside Club in the Port Area. Speak with Davy, and he'll ask you to clear out some zombies in the sewers. Form a squad of zombies, gear them up with the best equipment you can make, and head down into the sewers as per Davy's bidding. Once you're done exterminating the undead, you'll get a bunch of keys that you can give to Davy, and in return, he'll give you the Love Novel you need to progress Herbert's quest in Graveyard Keeper 2.
Unlike the first battle for the liberation of the Port Area, you won't be able to build any defenses to help you against the zombie horde underground. You can still hire mercenaries to fight for you, but if you don't want to spend any money, you can instead bring an entourage of friendly zombies to help you out. Make sure they're kitted out so that they reach at least 8 Defense Power. Otherwise, you won't be able to start the mission.
For this quest, I brought along 4 zombies armed with weapons and armor made of Iron, though one was unarmored and had a basic bow. I got these guys from the main quests you do for Gunter and the Plague Doctor. Once you're done with the sewer battle, you can disarm your zombies and give them tools so they can help you with your tasks back at base.
Davy is sitting in the upper-left corner of Linda's Dockside Club. After you finish the sewer battle, you'll get a bunch of rewards that includes 3 Keys for Looters. Give one of the keys to Davy, and he'll give you the Love Novel in return. From hereon out, you can give Davy more keys on Lust (scarlet) days in exchange for loot.
You can buy more Keys for Looters from level 2/3 Jewelers.
After successfully getting the Love Novel from Davy, head back to the barracks and give it to Herbert. He'll thank you for your help, but since he's illiterate, he won't be able to read the Love Novel by himself. The quest for the novel ends here, but it'll immediately be followed up by another one, which involves convincing the nun Agatha to read the Love Novel to Herbert.
Completing this quest improves your reputation with Herbert, and you'll get 2 Town Gratitude scrolls for your trouble as well. More importantly, you'll get to continue the rest of the game's quests and features — if you speak to Agatha as per Herbert's request, she'll give you the totally wonderful idea of assembling a church choir using your beloved undead drones.
