Final Fantasy 14's final patch before the release of Evercold is finally here, bringing with it a new set of MSQ quests to play through, and the long-awaited introduction of Beastmaster, the game's new limited job.
Beastmaster has proven to be quite the hit so far, breathing new life into the earlier areas of the game by having high-level players stalk around for beasts to capture. It's a decent time sink that should tide us over until the game's next expansion, but there is one element of the job that people are already getting pretty sick of.
To really drive home the idea that you are a master of beasts when playing as Beastmaster, one idea that Square Enix had was to let you have a beast accompany you at all times, even if you go inside housing and, more crucially, inside player cities. If you've noticed a lot of random trees, crabs, and goobues running around Limsa recently, that's what's happening.
While a novel idea in theory, in reality, it's actually annoying quite a lot of people who now have to deal with dozens of enemies alongside dozens of players clogging up city Aetherytes. Limsa Lominsa is a prime example, as you'll have several people AFKing with their pets out, taking up a bunch of space and generally being quite annoying.
There are ways to shrink the size of these creatures, just as you would with summons like Ifrit and Titan for Summoner, and reducing the number of players on screen at once can also help, but there is no way to actually hide the monsters summoned by other Beastmasters.
And, unfortunately for Square Enix, the novelty of having 13 goobues, 5 crabs, and 6 trees running around player cities is starting to drastically wear off for some people. Across social media you can find plenty of posts begging for Square Enix to add some kind of toggle in the future, and having no real interest in Beastmaster right now myself, I have to agree.
I would be surprised if it doesn't happen eventually, especially if it's causing frame rate drops and other performance issues for some players. At the very least, I'm sure there will be at least one irritated modder out there that takes it into their own hands eventually.
