HBO has announced three new cast members for The Last of Us Season 3. John Goodman, Laura Bailey, and Ian Alexander are all joining the show, with the latter two carrying a specific significance that anyone who has played The Last of Us: Part II will pick up on immediately. The timing of the announcement wasn't accidental either: September 26th is, of course, The Last of Us Day – the date the Cordyceps outbreak sets everything in motion across both the games and the show. HBO clearly knew what they were doing.
Bailey portrays Elizabeth, one of the leaders of the Seraphites – the religious cult that functions as one of the central antagonist factions in Part II. Alexander plays Paco, who makes up one half of a duo called the "Heroes of the Highway" alongside Goodman's Joey. That duo is original to the television series and doesn't exist in the games, which is interesting, given how closely Season 1 mapped to its source material.
The casting of Bailey and Alexander specifically is rather interesting, since both are returning to the Last of Us universe in completely different capacities from their game counterparts.
Ian Alexander played Lev in The Last of Us: Part II – a young Seraphite who becomes one of Abby's closest allies across the game's second half. He's now playing Paco, a different character entirely, on the same show that is actively adapting the material his game character appeared in. Laura Bailey voiced and motion-captured Abby in Part II, the character whose storyline dominated Season 2 and is now being played on screen by Kaitlyn Dever. Bailey is instead playing Elizabeth, a Seraphite leader.
It's an unusual creative choice, and one that could go either way depending on how self-aware the show decides to be about it. Both Bailey and Alexander are well-liked in the games community – Bailey in particular has a very high-profile voice acting career, with credits including Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man 2 and Vex'ahlia in The Legend of Vox Machina. Their presence in Season 3 should be a big bonus.
John Goodman joining The Last of Us is the headline name, and Joey – the character he's playing – is one of two "Heroes of the Highway," a self-styled duo original to the show. The other half of that duo is Alexander's Paco, which makes their dynamic one of the more curious additions to a season that already has a lot of moving pieces.
