The team behind the ambitious Project Diablo 2 mod has just unveiled a first look at its new season, and I'm already feeling the itch. It's been great to see Blizzard return to D2 with additions such as Reign of the Warlock, but there are still plenty of reasons to check out the next update for its most impressive fan-made overhaul. Drawing inspiration from Path of Exile, it expands build possibilities and endgame activities dramatically, making one of the most beloved RPGs of all time even more fulfilling, and Season 14 is about to make the completionists and collectors very happy.

Project Diablo 2 is one of those true labors of love that you have to stand back and admire. It envisions a world where "development never ceased" and D2 continued to grow and expand. Over the past six years of seasonal updates it has brought a veritable wealth of new items, skills, and enemies into the fold. Then there's the endgame mapping system, inspired by Path of Exile's Atlas and complete with ultra-hard pinnacle boss battles, and not forgetting more excellent quality-of-life improvements than you could reasonably count.

Team lead 'SenpaiSomething' has just given us a first glimpse at Project Diablo 2 Season 14, in particular focusing on the overhauled stash system. It's now separated out into multiple tabs, with each offering you ample storage for all the things hoarders might have been reluctant to let go. There's a Uniques tab and a Set tab, both capable of holding one copy of every single item type in that category - and they'll even display the possible stat ranges for those you don't currently own.

There's also a Maps tab, with separate groupings for the different tiers. Then you've got the other options such as Gems and Runes, along with an optional 'affinity' toggle for each page that will cause any items that belong in that section to be auto-sorted into the right category when you drop them into your stash. Personal gold for each character has been removed, and instead the gold limit for your shared stash has been raised to 25 million.

Want to prove that you're truly the ultimate collector? The new 'Discovery Progress' system will check off each Unique and Set item you find, marking them with an icon to track all those you've come across. You don't need to fight with your friends, as every player within the game will get this progression, providing they were there both when the item was found and when it was identified (presumably to avoid any cheesing). Complete the list and you'll earn a 'Discovery' aura, along with your achievement being announced server-wide.

While that's the biggest inclusion, there are more improvements to look forward to. Jewels have been upgraded with the ability to roll up to +5% elemental damage as a prefix. Rune crafting has been made smoother, and you'll now be able to socket them directly from a stack instead of having to separate one out from the rest before you can put it into an item. The character screen has new sorting options, and a handful more items have been given rare alternate skins that have a small chance to drop instead of the standard version.

There's a new map type, The Bitter Depths, courtesy of 'Roofooevazan,' and the team has added a 'monsters remaining' counter for endgame maps that will let you know how many foes are left in a zone once the count falls below 100. On the balance side, there are several adjustments to watch out for, such as Blaze now granting phasing so you can walk through enemies, Blessed Hammer projectiles no longer colliding with walls or objects, and a rework to the Gloom Runeword that includes the ability to apply an additional curse.
