A new update for Marvel’s Wolverine has just dropped, and it lets you make collectibles far less pointless by turning off their hints, although the story scent trail isn't going anywhere.
As you no doubt know, Marvel’s Wolverine has found itself in the eye of the discourse storm for a long time now. Even before release, “fans” were looking to tear it apart at pretty much every turn, in large part due to everything that’s going on with PlayStation. Things didn’t get much better when it launched to a surprising number of mixed reviews.
One of Wolverine’s main issues that got really blown out of proportion was the blue scent trail that leads Logan to objectives and collectibles, which players really hated for such a linear game. Although Insomniac once defended the scent trail, it seems to have bowed to the backlash and realised it was a touch too far.
Earlier today, Insomniac Games announced that it had just deployed another hotfix for Marvel’s Wolverine, the second in a week. This update once again focuses on the infamous blue scent trail lines (although specifically for Whisky Bottles), as well as the audio ping hint for the Material Crates and the purple roots that pop up for Nightmare Doors.
Players now have the choice to toggle off all of the collectible hints that are in Marvel’s Wolverine and make finding them a lot more involved than just letting Logan tell you where something is. It’s a big step in the right direction, although I have to wonder how many players are going to make use of it this far after launch. Still, a win is a win.
While I didn’t complain about the storyline scent trail in my review, I did note that it felt too far to provide such obvious hints for every collectible.
That being said, anyone hoping for the blue scent trail to be outright removed from Marvel’s Wolverine might not want to hold their breath. The update confirms that “Story-critical Senses will still appear in the world”, so it looks like Insomniac is holding firm with that representation of Logan’s senses. You never know, though; it could end up being tweaked even more.
