Every Officially Confirmed Lore Change In Marvel's Wolverine

Insomniac Games is setting out to tell a new Marvel Comics story with Marvel's Wolverine, and that also means that the developer has made a few surprising lore changes that longtime fans probably aren't expecting. Like the developer's Marvel's Spider-Man series, Marvel's Wolverine shows a fresh side of Logan that isn't the traditional Earth-616 comic canon.

That doesn't mean that Marvel's Wolverine's story is a complete rework, though. Logan's core personality and many supporting characters will remain intact. Marvel's Wolverine's release date is right around the corner, and Insomniac Games has confirmed several compelling lore changes that players should expect.

This is one of the biggest and most surprising changes to the usual Marvel Comics lore. Charles Xavier hasn't yet founded the group known as the X-Men, so many staple characters fans are used to won't be present in the story. There's always the chance that surprise cameos could be in store for players, but that remains to be seen.

Other Wolverine-led games from the past, like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, have pushed the X-Men aside and left them out of the spotlight, but Insomniac Games is taking things a step further by completely writing them out of existence. In Marvel's Wolverine, the world Logan finds himself in is darker and more dangerous for mutants, so there aren't any safe havens like Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

The X-Men comics are some of the most popular that Marvel has to offer, so Insomniac Games sidelining the beloved team is a bold move. That kind of boldness could pave the way for quite an exciting story, though.

Marvel's Wolverine won't be completely void of a mutant-led team, and Insomniac Games is remixing Team X's role. In the comics, Team X is traditionally seen as a secret black ops group run by the CIA that brainwashes mutants to do the government's bidding and assassinate targets.

This time around, Team X is an underground group that works to save mutants from dangers like experimentation and kidnapping. Although this sounds an awful lot like the X-Men, it isn't. Team X is made up of characters like Mystique and Sabretooth, so this lineup potentially has looser morals than Xavier's mutant team.

Team X fills the hole left by the X-Men's absence, but it also opens the door for Marvel's Wolverine's story to explore some interesting moral gray areas. Staple lore points like Wolverine and Sabretooth's relationship will get to be seen in a new light, too.
