Was Marvel Tokon Really a Flop? Here's What The Numbers Say

If you are either a member of the Fighting Game Community or have come across most of the discussions surrounding Arc System Works' Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, you might think the game had been KOed, with many blaming its niche tag-fighter focus, horrific PC launch, and unavailability in multiple regions as the main reasons behind its loss of steam.

And believe me, the word-of-mouth damage suffered by the title might justify those thoughts, as Tokon's performance issues saw many refund it on Steam, while the announced EOD of fellow tag-fighter 2XKO set the red alert in many pro players' minds.

But even if being the second coming of the Dragon Ball FighterZ phenomenon would be a tall ask for pretty much all franchises but one, did the new Marvel tag fighter really flop, as many say? Or is its current fame just the product of disproportionate expectations?

That's, however, where the PC conundrum comes into play, as the report also revealed that of the total, 82% of buyers chose to commit to PlayStation 5, with developers still being unable to win over the Steam player base. The game peaked at a little over 24K on the platform but has seen its numbers decrease since. At the time of writing, Marvel Tokon is sitting at mixed reviews and averaging between 700 to 900 peak daily concurrent PC players. As seen in SteamDB, the number is on a downward trajectory, with the title having lost over 1.5K since the beginning of the month.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has reportedly sold 750,000 copies across all platforms, which translated to around $50 million in revenue.

In mid-September, the game's director, Kazuto Sekine, both issued an apology for the troubled PC launch and revealed the team's plans for the future of the title. In his words: ''It was never our intention for players to be unable to enjoy the game as we envisioned, and we are currently making progress on improvements to the PC version so that everyone can enjoy the game to the fullest.''

Although clearly unable to meet the high expectations of the community or the imagined investment behind the Marvel IP, calling Marvel Tokon a flop would be unfair, as the game is less than two months old and did generate huge numbers when compared to most on the scene (or all non-Tekken or Street Fighter mainline products in recent memory).

It is safe to say, however, that whether the tag fighter can mount a comeback and generate steam to both push forward and create its own niche will rely on three things: fixing its still-present PC issues, winning back community support, and most importantly, giving casual and hardcore players a reason to return or even give it a chance after weeks of not likely to dissipate bad PR. How can they do that? Well, it might be tricky at first, but things might change. After all, the sure-to-break-records Avengers: Doomsday is coming out later in the year to give it a hand.
