There is a wide breadth of what you can expect out of RPGs. Will you take command of several units and fight your way to victory, or live out a power fantasy of taking out some grotesque creature transformed by horrors beyond your comprehension? These days, it feels like there's a wider divide between a gritty and realistic RPG and a colorful JRPG with the power of anime on their side.
In this divide, I've noticed a trend that a lot of RPGs invite you to be whoever you wish to be in their worlds, and JRPGs typically make you play as the hero of the hour. You make their choices, but they don't influence too many things along the way. JRPGs are typically good "numbers go up" games instead of power fantasies. But I've often enjoyed the detailed stories in JRPGs more than RPGs.
Just because something is a trend doesn't mean there aren't any options for those that want something different. There are a handful of iconic JRPGs that allow you to take up the role of a prominent character and be part of the story, even if you ultimately might not influence it too much.
I've cut down a list of JRPGs that go out of their way to make you a part of their experience, focusing on and highlighting the best ones out there. There aren't many that fit this criteria and excel at it, but that's what makes these games all the more special.
I don't think I have to explain Kingdom Hearts to you if you're here reading this. If anything, you're probably someone already frustrated that Kingdom Hearts III added elements of Kingdom Hearts Union X & Dark Road when you didn't play it. I hate to break it to you, but yes. The mobile game is growing increasingly important to the story's overall lore. It's required reading for Kingdom Hearts IV at this point.
Kingdom Hearts Union X is most famous for being a game where you get to be the protagonist. You, yes you, become an important Keyblade Wielder who survived the great Keyblade War and served as one of the original Dandelions. Even though a lot of us had issues with how KHUX played back in the day, KHUX knew how to make your involvement as the player count. There are some pretty shocking implications and connections you'll only know if you make your way through Union X's story, even if it's one of the most daunting Kingdom Hearts experiences to read up on so far.
Fortunately, some fans are working on archiving the experience. Right now, there's an unofficial way to play KHUX and Dark Road in your browser. KHUX is restricted to its theater version, but at least you can get through the story as your own character instead of watching it through someone else's cutscene compilation. It's the best way to experience it, in my opinion, as an original KHUX player.
