Nvidia has been at the forefront of AI utilization in the PC graphics market for years, using it in its Super Resolution and Frame Generation settings. Refusing to slow down, Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5, a setting coming to all RTX-enabled GPUs that allows players to actively generate textures "that step forward in using AI to bring real-time graphics closer than ever to Hollywood-grade photorealism."
Pushing the bleeding edge even further, on September 1, Nvidia officially unveiled DLSS 5's first supported game, NBA 2K27, allowing players to utilize the setting to rather mixed results. Unsatisfied with the limited access, modders put together a program to inject DLSS 5 into any RTX-supported game, allowing us to see an early version of this experimental tech.
I'll be going over exactly how you can activate DLSS 5 in any game of your choosing, for genuine experimentation or just to see how far you can push the fledgling software. Before we get started, note that this is an actively workshopped mod, requiring frequent updates and suffering from shaky stability. Discretion is advised for users who suffer from eye strain!
Note that DLSS 5 is currently only available on GPUs in the RTX 50 family, so folks with older hardware may see extra instability due to compatibility issues.
First things first, download the mod itself, known as the DLSS 5 Swapper.
Once launched, you can navigate to the Games tab to see any auto-detected games from your various launcher libraries. If the game you want isn't there, drag its folder into the launcher to test it for DLSS 5 functionality. Once you've got your game, click install DLSS 5, activating it on any subsequent launch.
Now that DLSS 5 is active, you can press F8 while in-game to open the DLSS Control Overlay, allowing direct manipulation of different systems, multiple preset models, and the option to uninstall once you've had your fun. These settings are the make-or-break, and can be the difference between a slight touch-up and the monstrosities seen across social media.
Remember that the DLSS 5 Swapper is an unofficial mod, causing instability as we discussed, but also risking online bans depending on the games played. Use caution if you're giving it a spin in games that regulate competitive mods like League of Legends, as the Swapper could cause a false positive. This issue doesn't seem common, but it's worth considering.
