The estimated length of Xbox’s upcoming Fable reboot has been confirmed by the game’s developer.
During a group Q&A that took place during Gamescom, Playground Games staff were reportedly asked about the length of the game.
As reported by Polygon, associate game director Will Kennedy stated that the main quest would take 15-20 hours to beat, with side-quests taking roughly the same amount of time.
“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy said. “And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.”
Another attendee at the group Q&A session then reportedly commented that this meant it was “not a huge game”, to which associate game director Craig Little replied: “As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do.”
Fable games have not traditionally been extremely long adventures when compared to other games in the action RPG genre. User-submitted estimates on How Long to Beat state that the first three games took an average of 12.5 hours, 13 hours and 13.5 hours respectively to beat the main story, suggesting the new Fable is in line with these.
The “life systems” mentioned by Kennedy refer to the interactions the player can have with the 1,000 NPCs which live in the game’s region of Albion – 400 of whom live in the capital city of Bowerstone – and the way the player can technically turn the game into a life sim purely by interacting with them.
Each of the 1,000 characters has their own homes, hobbies, traits and personalities, and all are fully voiced. The player can talk to each of them, and they will respond to the player’s actions in different ways, depending on their own characteristics.
