HBO has added John Goodman and two familiar The Last of Us veterans to the Season 3 cast, with all three actors taking on new roles in the Emmy-winning drama. The additions bring two performers with particularly close ties to The Last of Us Part 2 back to the franchise in substantially different roles.
The casting news was announced September 26, coinciding with the 2026 iteration of The Last of Us Day, the franchise's annual celebration marking the date of the Cordyceps outbreak in its fictional timeline. The additions further expand the ensemble for The Last of Us Season 3, which is planned to air in 2027 as the final season of HBO's TV adaptation of Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic games.
Joining Goodman are Ian Alexander and Laura Bailey, who respectively portrayed Lev and Abby in The Last of Us Part 2. Neither will reprise those parts in HBO's adaptation. Alexander has instead been cast as Paco, while Bailey will play Elizabeth, one of the Seraphites' leaders. Goodman will portray Joey, with HBO describing him and Paco as a friendly duo who call themselves the "Heroes of the Highway." The network has not disclosed further details about their roles in the upcoming season.
Alexander originally portrayed Lev in The Last of Us Part 2, providing the character's voice and performance capture, but Kyriana Kratter has already been cast as Lev in the television adaptation. Alexander's other credits include Netflix’s The OA and Star Trek: Discovery, in which the actor played Gray Tal. Bailey has an even longer history with The Last of Us. She provided the voice and performance capture for Abby in The Last of Us Part 2, earning major industry recognition for the role, including honors from The Game Awards and BAFTA. Bailey also previously appeared in HBO's adaptation in a much smaller role, playing one of the Firefly nurses during The Last of Us Season 1 finale's hospital sequence

Elizabeth will therefore be Bailey's second live-action role in HBO's TV adaptation, but once again not the character she is best known for playing in the games. Abby is portrayed in the television series by Kaitlyn Dever, whose casting required the show to translate a character with a notably different physical presentation from her game counterpart. HBO's The Last of Us has already addressed some of those differences surrounding Dever's version of Abby while preserving the character's central place in the story. Goodman, by contrast, is new to the franchise. The Emmy winner joins The Last of Us after wrapping HBO's The Righteous Gemstones, in which he played patriarch Eli Gemstone throughout the comedy's four-season run. His decades-spanning credits also include Roseanne, The Conners, the Coen brothers' The Big Lebowski, and the Monsters, Inc. films, in which he voices James P. "Sulley" Sullivan.
The three additions join an already expanded Season 3 ensemble. Previously announced newcomers include Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Manny, Patrick Wilson as Jerry, Jason Ritter as Hanley, Michelle Mao as Yara, Kratter as Lev, Li Jun Li as Miriam, Peter Sarsgaard as Amon, and Clea DuVall as a Seraphite. The growing roster reflects the series' move deeper into the WLF-Seraphite conflict and the portion of the story centered on Abby, whose perspective remains one of the defining elements of The Last of Us Part 2's narrative.
