Classic RPG Blue Dragon now has an unofficial PC port titled re:Blue.
Blue Dragon is an Xbox 360 exclusive game developed by Mistwalker, the studio founded by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. The soundtrack is composed by Nobuo Uematsu, also best known for Final Fantasy, and the characters were all designed by the Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.
The PC port, re:Blue, is a static recompilation that can run natively on Windows, Linux, and MacOS systems. It is also Steam Deck compatible. This allows the game to run at higher frame rates and custom resolutions, in addition to opening the door to mod support.
The port was helmed by project lead and developer crack (aka Tomcl7), with help from Rc0ld.
A trailer was released to announce the port’s availability, and it ends with a dedication to Akira Toriyama, who passed away in 2024.
The re:Blue code is free to download, but installation requires all three retail Blue Dragon DVD discs or their disc images.
Blue Dragon is playable on modern Xbox consoles via backwards compatibility, though that version doesn’t offer the same degree of customizability that the re:Blue PC port has.
The PC port used the ReXGlue SDK toolchain, an Xbox 360 recompilation runtime and toolkit that converts Xbox 360 PowerPC code into C++ that can be easily read and run on modern platforms.
