lily's world XD is a psychological horror game that starts with a burst of nostalgia before quickly drawing you into the mystery surrounding Lily Han. You play as somebody who apparently dumpster dives regularly, and you happen to find an old laptop that still works. It belonged to a normal teenager in 2004, but as you start looking through the files, you learn that Lily went from normal teenager to a girl in danger. However, it might not be too late to help her.

The nostalgic factor hit me hard and fast, then the descent into psychological horror happened at such a steady pace that you're already in the middle of it by the time you realize that everything is going wrong, it's too late to turn back. After going into lily's world XD as blind as possible about it, I found myself enjoying the experience a lot more than I thought I would at the start.

Websites and the internet in general were quite different in 2004, and because Lily's laptop hasn't been updated, you step into it as if it was frozen in time. It was such a wild experience to see a desktop set up like that. The fairy mouse cursor. The messenger app. The old websites where you got excited because you figured out how to change the background colors or customize them in another way. Wow, what a trip through my memories that's been. I was so distracted by nostalgia that I didn't realize I was in the thick of the horror elements until the glitches and hacking started happening.

There was even a dress-up game you could play that brought back memories too. As I got into the psychological horror parts, I felt a little sad that there would likely be players who don't have that initial feeling of stepping into their own past rather than stepping into the past as a general concept, because they were born too late to experience that older version of the internet. I have to imagine that this aspect that was an early highlight of the game for me is going to fall flat for other players, and that's quite sad in terms of atmosphere.

lily's world XD is meant to be a short game, taking only about five hours to complete. This felt like a good decision for the game, as I believe that drawing it out would've made it lose the interest that the steady pacing gives the story. There's also only so much you can include in a game that relies on internet sleuthing, and going overboard would've made it tedious rather than fascinating.

Most of the time is spent solving puzzles, but the design of the puzzles makes you feel like a detective. Honestly, lily's world XD felt like a detective thriller for a large portion of the game, while the horror elements are part of Lily's story, which I loved. It has similar vibes to the Welcome to the Game series, where you essentially end up investigating matters that you should've left alone if you didn't want to attract danger.
