Forgotten Blizzard Games That Were Once Perfect

Forgotten Blizzard Games That Were Once Perfect

Blizzard Entertainment has been around for nearly four decades, and in that time, they have created some of the greatest video game franchises the world has ever seen. You have Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft, with the MMO and RTS branches, alongside spin-offs and newcomers like Overwatch. However, due to the passage of time, a lot of their earlier games have been largely forgotten, despite being exceptional even today.

You have entries into iconic universes that were superseded by sequels, revolutionary titles that took major strides in their respective genres, and much older names that deserve far more respect. While Blizzard is still leading the charge in several genres all at once, it is still nice to go back in time and appreciate the games that got us to where we are now.

Before Silicon & Synapse rebranded to Blizzard Entertainment, they were already shaking up familiar genres and pushing them into entirely new territory. Rock N' Roll Racing is one of the clearest examples of that. The game takes the concept of a racing game and evolves it into a combat-focused experience featuring futuristic planets, weaponized vehicles, upgrades, and a soundtrack full of recognizable rock songs that gave the otherwise chaotic races an unmistakable identity.

In the years since, Blizzard has described the game as an important influence on the company's tendency to mix serious genres with humor and exaggerated personalities, and that exact combination is what makes the game stand out among the other racers of the era, and even of today. While you would never associate Blizzard with racing games, it is still cool to see how far a company with such acclaim went from its early beginnings in a whole different world to an industry leader decades on.

The Lost Vikings is practically the poster child for early Blizzard gaming, and came well before the company became associated with a handful of enormous franchises. Released in 1992, the game follows three lovable Vikings—Erik, Baleog, and Olaf—kidnapped by an alien and forced to navigate increasingly elaborate puzzle-platforming stages, with each character using completely different abilities, meaning that your progress depends on constantly switching between them and using their strengths together.

Lost Vikings 2 returned with the same basic concept while adding new abilities and two new characters, Fang and Scorch, expanding the possibilities and giving players a real reason to jump back in. Looking back now, I consider the series a kind of snapshot of Blizzard's formative years, and it is really cool to see iconic characters like the Vikings return later on in games like Heroes of the Storm.
