GTA 6 is one of the most-anticipated entertainment releases ever, putting a huge amount of pressure on Rockstar Games and Take-Two to deliver when the game finally releases on November 19. Combined with Rockstar's pedigree, the release of Red Dead 2, and the massive sales of Grand Theft Auto 5, it's no surprise that Rockstar is nervous about living up to its past (but more so internally than externally).
Considering Grand Theft Auto 5's accomplishments since its release in 2013 spell out exactly what Rockstar is facing—one of the most profitable entertainment products ever made (if not THE most profitable), continuously topping sales charts years later, launching a stage for GTA Online that raked in even more money, and further firmly establishing Rockstar as one of the most prestigious studios in gaming. Red Dead 2 was at least another IP, but GTA 6 is a direct follow-up to Rockstar's most successful game ever (perhaps gaming's most successful game ever).
Even with the massive expectations surrounding it, Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson admitted that the studio is “nervous” about GTA 6’s upcoming release and how players will respond after more than a decade of waiting. Nelson discussed that challenge in a recent interview with IGN, explaining that Rockstar is trying not to focus too much on the expectations surrounding GTA 6. Instead, the studio wants the sequel to build on what came before while still feeling familiar to longtime fans:
“I try not to think about [the expectations]. You’re aware of it, of course. But I think we just have to try and make something that we feel is innovating on what we’ve done previously, evolving it while still making it feel familiar.”

Nelson also explained that the pressure coming from fans and the wider gaming industry is not necessarily the biggest concern inside Rockstar. According to him, the expectations Rockstar places on itself are even greater, with the team aiming to make GTA 6 as polished as possible. Whether it's GTA 6's story, characters, or gameplay, a lot of the pressure comes from the inside, with Nelson specifically saying that the external pressure does not compare to “the pressure we put on ourselves as a team.” Nelson continued, "Everyone wants things to be perfect. We are nervous! Nervous, of course, but also excited to see how people respond to [the Netflix Extended Look] and then ultimately the game."
With GTA 6's massive pre-orders too, there's certainly financial pressure (even with that GTA Online money). So far, it remains to be seen if everything released so far lives up to Rockstar's high expectations for itself, but it seems safe to say the community reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. The more and more Rockstar shows for GTA 6, the more and more the hype becomes palpable.
Of course, there's a golden rule in gaming to keep in mind here: anything can flop. That does not appear to be the case, and this is to say nothing about the quality of GTA 6 as shown so far, Rockstar's skills, or Take-Two's business tactics, but one thing is for certain. November 19 will be a big day for gaming, as the release date of GTA 6 has been a long, long time coming for many fans.
