Metroid Ravenous Officially Revealed, Release Date Confirmed

After previously leaking, the heavily rumored Metroid Ravenous was officially revealed during Nintendo's September direct event, showcasing all new 2.5D-style gameplay as well as confirming the release date. The Metroid franchise has been back in the spotlight as of late, with the series reaching its own 40th Anniversary back on August 6, 2026. Following the launch of Prime 4 last year, Nintendo is bringing Samus back for another adventure in 2027 with Metroid Ravenous.

While the Metroid Prime series have become quite popular, longtime fans continue to hold a special place in their hearts for the 2D series, which kicked off the franchise 40 years ago. Metroid Dread continued that legacy in 2021 after a lengthy development cycle that was teased long before the game would ever see the light of day. 5 years later, Metroid Ravenous was leaked ahead of its official reveal in official documents from Brazil, giving fans hope that Nintendo was once again revisiting the series and continuing the story.

5 years after the launch of Metroid Dread, Nintendo and development partner Mercury Steam are returning to the series for the next entry in the 2D side scrolling series. Metroid Ravenous was officially revealed during Nintendo's September 9 Direct event, and it seemingly picks up after the events of Metroid Dread. The trailer shows Samus Aran in a precarious situation as she's attacked by mysterious assailants and appears to be trapped inside a planet. The trailer also confirms that Samus is not only fully voiced acted, but she appears to have plenty to say during the adventure as well.

The trailer showcases the familiar side scrolling action brought forward from Metroid Dread, with Samus running and gunning through levels, performing her parry ability, and even battling some bigger bosses as well, such as a giant snake-like creature. However, it also re-establishes Samus and her Metroid DNA as she is shown absorbing enemies during highly cinematic moments. There also appears to be moments when Samus is able to transform into her Metroid-based form and perform some sort of Ultimate or Finishing move as well.

While Nintendo didn't outright confirm it, the previous leak indicated MercurySteam was back as the developer to continue the work they started with Metroid Dread. It's also expected that series producer Yoshio Sakamoto will also be back helping with the game's development as well. Either way, fans don't have to wait too much longer to experience the next chapter as the trailer confirmed that Metroid Ravenous is launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.

If it is indeed MercurySteam behind the controls, the work should prove to be a boon for the studio as it has experienced a bit of recent turmoil. The studio's previous game, Blades of Fire, struggled to find an audience when it launched in 2025. Unfortunately, this led to layoffs at MercurySteam with the game underperforming and leading to "higher-than-expected write-offs." The situation at MercurySteam has been an unfortunate reality for the games industry in recent years, with many major companies like Microsoft and Epic Games announcing layoffs and studio closures.
