It took Nintendo a little under a year and a half to reveal its first special edition Switch 2, and what do you know, it's a Zelda-branded one.
To celebrate the series' 40th anniversary, we're getting a special Triforce-emblazoned system, complete with patterned green and black Joy-Con and a swanky gold dock. We got all of the natural "oohs" and "aahs" out of the way when the SE was first officially revealed in a recent Direct, but then our minds quickly turned to the important question: do we actually want this?
The answer, of course, is a resounding yes — seriously, would anyone really say no to a system with a Triforce slapped on it? — but it did bring up some disagreement at Nintendo Life Towers about our love for series-branded consoles on the whole. Switch 1 was treated to no fewer than 16 special edition models, and all of 'em came with a tie-in game placed front and centre.
Keen to plant our hot takes early before Switch 2 inevitably follows suit and lands a limited-time design that we all fall head over heels for, we've each shared our opinions on series-branded consoles below. Do we like a logo or two on our Joy-Con, or would we prefer something less game-related? Let's find out...
The second that the 40th anniversary Zelda system went up for pre-orders, I had mine placed. So yeah, you can probably guess where I fall on series-branded special editions.
That said, I do think that Zelda is a bit of an anomaly. I would feel weird playing something like Resident Evil on a Splatoon-themed system, or playing Mario Odyssey on that forgotten Monster Hunter Rise Switch 1. It just feels a little wrong, no? Like playing a different game on a clearly-branded arcade cabinet.
But Zelda is my jam. I'll play anything and everything on this Switch 2 when it arrives, and proudly showcase my Hylian heart as I do so. I'm usually not so taken by series branding, but Nintendo can blind me with Zelda any day of the week.
Heck, Pokémon can do the same! It's been a hot minute since I last mentioned my sexy Poké Ball New 2DS XL, hasn't it? Give me a system with a novelty button on the front (one that does nothing at all), and I'll be there in a heartbeat.
