I feel like racing games are rather overlooked by most gamers. It might be one of the most well-known genres thanks to how prominent Mario Kart is, but how often do you hear of a Mario Kart fan willingly playing a racing game that isn't Mario Kart? Or another mascot racer like Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, for example? It takes one to know one, because I speak from experience. I enjoyed CrossWorlds and grew up with Mario Kart 64 and Sonic Riders, but Forza Horizon never garnered my attention when I was younger.

It's a shame, too. I've found that racing games are a bit more timeless than they are given credit for by most people who pick up racing spin-offs regularly. If you like the rush of getting tricks right in Mario Kart World, then any racing game has the ability to bring that out of you if you're willing to give it a chance. That's what I learned when I finally started giving racing games a proper look, and if you're here, you might already know that for yourself.

But what do I mean when I say racing games are timeless? Well, let's look at some SNES racing games that prove my point exactly: that good racing games can last beyond a console generation if they're just that good.

The importance of graphics in video games has been a point of contention for the longest time. There's a line that's hard to define because of extremes between what requires detail to understand and wondering if we really need to see a character's pores for the type of story the game wants to portray. In my opinion, Stunt Race FX makes a great argument that good graphics aren't everything.

I know, I know. Stunt Race FX was ahead of its time, using technology built for Star Fox to bring its races into 3D. It also shared the same fate as the rail shooter in that it hasn't aged fantastically, as impressive as it is. If people can't bring themselves to play the original Final Fantasy 7 because of the way the graphics look, choosing Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its trilogy instead, then Stunt Race FX has no chance. Still, there's something incredibly special about how it feels that I believe helps it stand the test of time.

Too bad it runs slower than normal on Nintendo Switch Online.

You can't really talk about classic racing games without discussing arcade titles and their ports. Big Run: The Supreme 4WD Challenge - 13 Rallye is a unique SNES port of the arcade game simply known as "Big Run." It was based on one of the Dakar Rallies that coursed through Africa. While four-wheel-drive is in the title, SNES players would be tasked to get the fastest time on certain legs of the rally. They could enlist staff to help them make this possible, including navigators.
