I am quite possibly the most insufferable fanboy of Grasshopper Manufacture and its founder and CEO, Goichi “Suda51” Suda,” that I know. The games produced by Suda and his studio are well-known for being extremely, wonderfully bizarre, with their most recent offering being the very well-received (by me) Romeo is a Dead Man last February.
While the studio has a good track record of delivering on Suda’s distinctive vision, it hasn’t always had the best luck on the financial side of things, which is unfortunately very standard for auteur game development. The studio was acquired by Chinese company NetEase back in 2021 as part of a whirlwind of investments and acquisitions during the COVID-induced gaming boom, but as those gains have started to diminish, NetEase is starting to liquidate assets, which means it’s time for Grasshopper to bail out.
In an official company statement picked up by Gematsu, Suda announced on Grasshopper’s behalf that, with Romeo is a Dead Man in the can, the studio is leaving NetEase’s camp and returning to being a wholly independent developer so it can keep making the games it wants to make.
In the official statement, Suda expressed his appreciation to the gaming public for the positive reception of Romeo is a Dead Man, as well as to NetEase for helping to facilitate the game’s creation. “Our whole studio would like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone who enjoyed the game, and to everyone who worked tirelessly toward making its release possible,” he said.
He went on to say that, with the game’s completion, Grasshopper’s staff has been mulling over what’s coming next in the pipeline, and realized that they want to make games that appeal to a wide variety of different gaming enthusiasts across many different styles. It’s for this reason that the studio is going independent once again.
“This decision was reached after thorough discussions with NetEase Games, and with their generous cooperation. We continue to cherish the amazing relationship our companies have built, and look forward to further collaboration when the opportunity arises.”
