Let's hope it's a signalling something substantial.
StarCraft is Blizzard’s forgotten child. There was a time in gaming history when the franchise dominated the cultural discourse. Its biggest competitors were Blizzard’s own games—Diablo and Warcraft—and in some parts of the world, namely East Asia, the sci-fi RTS was one of the biggest games of all time. To some extent, it perhaps still is.
But it’s been a long 11 years since that series got anything worthwhile added to it. StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void came out in 2015, and in 2017 we got StarCraft Remastered. It seemed like Blizzard simply forgot what to do with its prized series, and with RTS games losing their grip on the zeitgeist, the company appears to have just decided to ignore it for the time being.
Recently, though, there have been rumors that Blizzard is working with Nexon on a potential revival. That alone should tell you how confident Blizzard is in StarCraft when it’s ready to offload it to a different company altogether. Either way, it could be the start of something great, if it ends up doing well eventually.
However, these rumors are as yet unconfirmed, but with BlizzCon now slowly approaching, Blizzard itself has started putting some pretty big teasers on StarCraft‘s official pages. The page glitches out, simulates false messages, and seems to completely crash at some points. As spotted by TLnet on X, this is just one in a series of teases that have been happening for days now ahead of BlizzCon.
The teaser on the Starcraft: Remastered homepage has advanced to its second stage stage, now simulating a failed message transmission before 'crashing.' How many more updates will we get before BlizzCon? pic.twitter.com/NqqAKBPOvy
Whether this is teasing a StarCraft 2 remaster or some complete edition, or perhaps even a remake, remains unclear. What I would love to see, though, is a move from real-time strategy to another genre while keeping StarCraft‘s amazing lore and narratives intact. I would love to get another RTS, don’t get me wrong, but for the sake of preserving the franchise and keeping corporate from putting a bullet through its head when it inevitably doesn’t live up to the grim words “expectations” and “projections,” perhaps a more modern, more popular genre would work better.
StarCraft‘s prize possession is, in my opinion, its story, and since it’s so Warhammer 40K-adjacent, it could use its magnetism to bring in a lot of fans of that franchise into the fray. But since they are getting Dawn of War 4 and, soon, Total War: Warhammer 40,000, strategy games might not be the best way to do it.
