Silent Hill: Townfall Update Coming After Fans Complain About Poor Performance on PC

Silent Hill: Townfall fans can breathe a sigh of relief after days of problematic graphics on PC, with many players reporting stuttering and visual artefacts that disrupt the gameplay experience.

In a post on the official Silent Hill X account, Konami and Townfall developer Screen Burn acknowledged the issues that players have been facing since the game launched for deluxe edition owners on Tuesday, September 22. The game formally releases on September 24, meaning reports of issues might only increase as hundreds of thousands of players jump into the Scotland-set horror story for the first time.

Little was shared as to what the update will directly address, aside from “performance-related issues affecting the Steam and Epic Games Store versions.” No release date for the patch was posted either, meaning developers are likely hard at work trying to iron out issues as quickly as possible to stem the turning tide of negative fan sentiment. No issues have been reported on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.

Vocal gamers have taken to social media sites like Reddit and X to complain about Silent Hill: Townfall’s poor performance on PC, often getting candid with Konami and Screen Burn about just how pissed off they really are.

One fan responded to the post regarding the coming update, saying it was "disrespectful" to release the game in such a state—especially when they asked players to pay extra to get early access to the game. The user described the game as being in a “completely broken state” and claimed to have "constant traversal stuttering”, even while using a top-of-the-range graphics card.

Redditors have also been having a field day on the official Silent Hill: Townfall subreddit, with many posting their own frustrating experiences with the game. One user wrote that they’ve been facing “stutter issues” and blamed Townfall’s use of Unreal Engine 5 for the issue.

Other fans echoed this, with some reminiscing about the silky smooth launch of Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year, built on Capcom’s tried-and-tested RE Engine. Reports also indicate that the stuttering issue seems to get worse as the game progresses, with some gamers labeling it an optimization issue, rather than a problem with the engine.

Whatever the issue, fans aren’t happy that they’ve forked out for a somewhat disappointing early access experience. The game appears to need serious heavy lifting to run smoothly at the minute, with one Redditor saying they noticed they’d reach 100% CPU during stutters, despite having an RTX 5080 and powerful processor.
