Gamemode One’s new Minecraft ‘AI players add-on’ lets you invite friendly bots into your world who mine, explore, and fight alongside you.
If you hate playing Minecraft alone, but your friends aren't always around, a new add-on is the perfect solution to your woes. Notable modding studio Gamemode One has just launched its 'AI players add-on,' which lets you bring computer-controlled allies into the sandbox game who will act like actual people. They'll automatically explore, mine, smelt, craft, and fight, but will be influenced by your actions to help keep the world feeling busy no matter what you're doing.
Because we need to clarify these things now, the 'AI' in question here is good old-fashioned artificial intelligence - there's no generative AI at play here, and the entire add-on has been manually programmed by the team at Gamemode One. Once you've enabled it, you can use a device to bring these bots into your Minecraft world, where they'll start getting to work on whatever takes their fancy. They make their own decisions and will set their own goals, with varying behavior designed to "surprise, impress, and occasionally baffle," much like real human companions.
I caught up with Gamemode One's Community Manager Anton Charpentier to dig into how this works. He explains that if a bot knows it needs stone tools, for example, it will search for cobblestone. Then it will move onto copper or iron, and so on. When it starts to get hungry, it will hunt for food and cook it. There are a variety of possible behaviors under the hood, and each NPC will choose what to pursue at a given moment based on its current context.
Charpentier notes that, while the bots are autonomous, they "are designed to follow the player's lead." If you're mining near them, they'll prioritize doing the same. If you head off to explore, they'll usually join you. You're also able to influence their behavior more directly by emoting near them to tell them to follow you, or giving them a little whack to make them stop what they're currently doing. A little mean, perhaps, but they are just machines after all.
The Minecraft AI players add-on is available now on the Minecraft Marketplace, priced at 830 Minecoins (approximately $4.99 / £4.99). You can grab it right here.
If you've ever fancied being part of a more chaotic server, or just wanted a few extra hands to help with the busy work, these friendly bots are a great boon. They even work while playing offline. It's easy to make the joke that it's the 'no friends add-on,' but Gamemode One says, "we prefer the 'more friends add-on.'" So whether your pals are busy, or they're simply bored of Minecraft, you'll always have companions to hand.
