Kirby and the World Beyond has been announced for Nintendo Switch 2, and will be released in 2027. The Kirby franchise has been a staple on Nintendo systems since the original Game Boy, and it will celebrate its 35th anniversary starting next year. While the series has largely focused on platforming since its inception, Kirby has starred in a plethora of other genres over the years. The character has appeared in fighting games, racers, and a lot more.
Since the Nintendo Switch 2 era began, Kirby has received a lot of focus. Shortly after the system's launch, a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Kirby and the Forgotten Land arrived on the system. Just a few months later, Kirby Air Riders was also released to critical acclaim. The latter game has quickly become a fan favorite, and has seen multiple amiibo releases over the last year.
Announced during the latest Nintendo Direct, Kirby and the World Beyond is a new 3D platforming game starring the titular character. After decades starring in 2D platforming games, 2022's Kirby and the Forgotten Land brought the character into the world of 3D. Kirby and the World Beyond seems to build on that concept, with what appears to be a large open world to explore. A set release date has not been confirmed, but the game will arrive in spring 2027.
Kirby's copy abilities have long been a series highlight, and it's clear from the trailer that Kirby and the World Beyond will continue that trend. Iconic copy abilities like Cutter, Sword, Parasol, and Bomb are shown in the trailer, but it seems the developers are expanding what they can do. With an open world to explore, it seems a lot of these abilities will have options that will help with exploration. For example, Cutter Kirby can be seen flying across the game's world, while Sword Kirby slices into trees in order to climb them. It's unclear whether the game will add new copy abilities, or if the developers will simply build on what the old ones can do.
King Dedede has long served as both an ally and enemy in the series, and it seems that will be the case in Kirby and the World Beyond, as well. The trailer shows Kirby battling his old enemy, but it also implies that players might have to help rescue Kind Dedede after his defeat. Kirby sends Dedede flying, and that action has opened up a new world to explore. There's also a new character that will help Kirby on his quest, seemingly acting in a role similar to Elfilin in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
With the announcement of Kirby and the World Beyond, Nintendo's plans for next year are starting to come into focus. The publisher now has multiple major first-party Switch 2 games planned, including Metroid Ravenous which releases on January 28. Additionally, Xenoblade Genesis and Pokemon Winds and Waves are both coming in 2027, though set release dates have not been confirmed. For those still on the fence about buying a Switch 2, it seems Nintendo is putting together a strong year for the system.
