Marvel's Wolverine On PS5 Review Scores Round-Up

Insomniac has really helped PlayStation carry the PS5 generation. Not just through its Spider-Man games, but also via the fantastic Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Based on its review scores, the studio will continue that streak when Marvel's Wolverine launches exclusively on PS5 on September 15, although maybe not to quite the same level as some of Insomniac's other games.

Wolverine currently has a 81 on OpenCritic and a 77 on Metacritic. While those aren't bad scores by any stretch of the imagination, they're quite a bit lower than what Insomniac has come to expect from its Marvel games. Both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 score 88, while Spider-Man: Miles Morales landed on an 85.

"Marvel’s Wolverine gets its claws in deep with a memorable, emotional, and high-stakes story, wonderful interpretations of Logan, Jean, and the rest of the cast, and brutally satisfying combat that distils the core of the character down to every snikt and claw pop," TheGamer's George Foster writes in their 4 out of 5 review. They also note that this feels like the first step towards a wider X-Men Insomniac universe.

Giant Bomb's review wasn't quite so glowing. Awarding the latest PS5 exclusive a 2.5 out of 5, Shawn McDowell writes, "Wolverine is a game with momentary sparks of fun, but its mostly-good combat getting constantly dragged down by mediocre storytelling, poor pacing, and an underwhelming amount of player agency left me very bored far too often."

Wccftech's Alessio Palumbo, who gave Wolverine an 8.5 out of 10, had an entirely opposite viewpoint on the game's story, saying it kept them glued to the game from start to finish. "Marvel's Wolverine is a very different game from Insomniac's Spider-Man adaptations, but it shows the developer really understands this hero, too," their review reads.

While perhaps not entirely fair, it sounds like Wolverine has been directly compared to Insomniac's Spidey games by most reviewers. It's what players will do when they get the chance to sink their claws into it next week when the game launches on September 15th. It's also the first thing I did when coming up with an angle for this article. Not only is it a Marvel game made by the same studio as the Spider-Man games, but Insomniac has even admitted Wolverine and Spider-Man exist in the same universe.

Wolverine is a very different game, though. That has been evident from the first proper trailer we were shown, and really should have been clear even before that. Wolverine can't swing around like Spidey. The X-Man's game was always going to be more enclosed and feel smaller. That said, even though its review scores are lower than Insomniac is used to, I can't imagine they're so much lower that it's going to impact what will almost certainly be sales in the millions, probably even tens of millions for Wolverine.
