Classic SNES RPG is Making a Comeback After 34 Years

An elusive SNES RPG and its sequel are being re-released for the first time in 34 years. Lufia 1 & 2 The Sinistrals Saga was announced during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, bringing the classic SNES RPGs to modern platforms, including PS5, Switch 2, and PC, in 2027. These are not remakes, but direct ports of the original Lufia & The Fortress of Doom and its sequel, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals.

The SNES is infamous for its incredible library of JRPGs, many of which are still considered the best the genre has to offer. Games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Earthbound may be the most famous examples on the console, but the Lufia games are often seen as underrated gems. Without an official way to play these games aside from an original SNES cartridge, modern audiences likely haven't experienced these early Lufia entries.

Lufia and its sequel, Lufia 2, return! In a love letter to JRPG fans, these two dramatic tales of love and loss, which moved countless players to tears, are back!

Developer Taito unveiled the return of Lufia during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, where the announcement trailer for Lufia 1 & 2 The Sinistrals Saga was shown. The original Lufia game was released all the way back in 1993 for SNES, and hasn't been re-released since. Its sequel, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinstrals, was released in 1995 in Japan and 1996 in North America. Although the only games being re-released are the first two Lufia games, the series has five mainline titles:

Lufia 1 features a generational story of heroes fighting against evil beings known as the Sinistrals within their Fortress of Doom. The majority of the game is played from the perspective of the descendants of the original heroes, who must fight back against the return of the Sinistrals. Rise of the Sinistrals acts as a prequel to the first game, showcasing the story of the original heroes that initially sealed away the Sinistrals in the prologue of Lufia 1.

Gameplay-wise, Lufia 1 and 2 feature traditional turn-based combat like other SNES JRPGs. Players will have to traverse dungeons, battle monsters, and manage their party and gear, similar to RPG franchises of the era like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Interestingly, Lufia 2 features a Pokemon-like creature-catching mechanic, where players can obtain Capsule Monsters that act as a fifth controllable party member, as well as several gambling minigames.

Due to their rarity and lack of re-releases, these early Lufia games are some of the most expensive SNES games on the market, going for anywhere between $200 and $500 depending on the condition. For retro game collectors, the announcement of these re-releases should come as good news, as they will likely drive down the prices for original Lufia SNES cartridges. The trailer for Lufia 1 & 2 The Sinistrals Saga doesn't give a specific release date outside 2027, so interested fans will want to wishlist the game on Steam, PlayStation, or the Nintendo eShop to keep tabs on future updates.
