It's fairly easy to chart the origins of what we now know as the genre that combines management simulation and the dubious, high-stakes world of medieval survival. It's where the likes of Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis live, but there was another early vanguard of this extremely specific genre that got its start alongside those heavy hitters.
Back in the early 2000s, The Guild existed in tandem with its contemporaries, crafting a complex world of reactive gameplay mixed with the struggle of trying to survive in the 14th century and its harsh, unforgiving realities. It was a deeply compelling, engaging game that I often credit with being one of the games that got me into this genre back in the day.
Now, almost twenty-five years later, the talented folks at THQ Nordic have just launched The Guild 1 Remake: Europa 1410 into early access. Having put hours well into the triple digits in recent titles like Europa Universalis V and Crusader Kings 3, jumping into The Guild 1 Remake felt like a fairly smooth transition. If you've played any of those titles, it will feel very familiar to you.
As it was back with the original game, The Guild 1 Remake tasks you with surviving and maintaining a business while dealing with an increasingly compex world of political intrigue and your own personal life. Once you've chosen a profession and created your avatar, the game really starts to unfold itself rather quickly. As ever, The Guild is built around you surviving a metaphorical minefield at every turn, which is part of the fun of this genre, and can often feel rather cutthroat in the most enjoyable way.
Each turn in The Guild is represented by a single year in one day. The choices to make during that day determine how your year goes, and it's something that may be hard to wrap your head around at first. I had to reacquaint myself with its systems, which was a bit of a challenge after playing Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings over the past several years.

It can be overwhelming if you're not super familiar with the genre. This kind of game is notoriously hard to get into, as even the most comprehensive of tutorials may not be enough if the game has a lot of systems that play off each other. Indeed, The Guild 1 Remake is a game built on those complex systems being intertwined with others. To its credit, THQ Nordic does the absolute best it can with The Guild 1 Remake to make you feel comfortable.
