Ubisoft's multiplayer shooter XDefiant made a surprise comeback nearly two years since its official servers went dark, all thanks to an ambitious fan-led preservation project with months of tenacious reverse-engineering work behind it. Although XDefiant's initial return proved short-lived before anyone could actually play it, the immense effort required to make it possible highlights both the technical complexity of reviving an always-online game and the broader challenges involved in attempting such a project at all.
Just days after Project Rogue surfaced, the impressive community effort was abandoned. Japanese outlet EAA FPS News reports that developer Red withdrew because of the stress associated with potential legal issues involving Ubisoft, citing messages from the project's official Discord server. The now-former developer had reportedly already dealt with a similar situation on another project, noting that he was not eager to repeat the experience. Fellow developer BodNJenie subsequently closed Project Rogue, saying attention had arrived too quickly and that he did not want legal trouble either. Importantly, neither developer said Ubisoft had actually contacted the team, issued a warning, or sent a cease-and-desist.
Project Rogue's bright-burning emergence arrives two and a half years after Ubisoft shut down The Crew, thus sowing the seeds for what would become the Stop Killing Games campaign. The open-world racer's servers formally switched off on March 31, 2024, mere months after it turned nine. This immediately made it unplayable on every platform due to its always-online nature. Some players even had their digital licenses for The Crew revoked through Ubisoft Connect. The move stirred up vocal consumer opposition the world over, while Ubisoft maintained that new server infrastructure and licensing constraints made the shutdown necessary.

Two and a half years later, The Crew is one of the most well-known examples of the immense potential that fan preservation has when combined with pure perseverance. The independent The Crew Unlimited project spent years developing custom server-emulation software for the decommissioned game, culminating in version 1.0 releasing in September 2025. As tends to be the case with unofficial revivals, the fan-made mod requires users to supply their own The Crew game files rather than redistributing them. In the 12 months since its full-fledged release, The Crew Unlimited has received updates at a fairly steady pace. Those releases are, naturally, focused on providing network security updates rather than introducing new content.
Project Rogue may never reach a comparable stage with XDefiant, but if The Crew Unlimited's continued presence is any indication, the group behind the hero shooter's unexpected revival may have given up prematurely. While Ubisoft's legal team is no stranger to cease-and-desist letters, the company generally takes a more permissive approach to fan-made projects centered on its older titles. For example, the unofficial "Community Edition" of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was not only allowed to launch on Steam earlier in 2026, but also received active support from the IP owner. That is according to one of the project's senior developers, who credited "a visit to Ubisoft" for helping him better understand the tools that made the ray-traced version of the cult-classic first-person ARPG possible.
