Ever since marketing first began for GTA 6, beaches have been a mainstay as a showcase for its new NPC designs and density, although many are curious how this will manifest in-game. After all, GTA 6's beaches could end up being some of the best places to see how much more detailed Rockstar's open world has become. Vice City is expected to be packed with pedestrians, tourists, and locals, and the beaches naturally provide an area where large groups of GTA 6 NPCs can gather at once.
With Rockstar also building more physical variety into its characters, those crowded beaches could look considerably different from what players have seen in previous Grand Theft Auto games. NPC variety has always been important to making a Grand Theft Auto world feel alive, but GTA 6 is pushing that idea further by giving characters more differences in height and body shape. Older games had technical limitations that made this difficult, but in GTA 6, everything from height and weight to core NPC designs is much more detailed and unique.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has compared GTA 6's approach to Red Dead Redemption 2, where simply traveling through the world could lead to unexpected encounters and distractions. He explained to IGN that GTA 6 is built around the same idea, saying players who take time to explore will be rewarded by things they are not necessarily directed toward through objectives, map icons, or other traditional prompts. The goal is for the world itself to create reasons to stop and look around, and that philosophy applies to the beaches of GTA 6.

The beaches are essentially a showcase for GTA 6's new approach to NPCs and population density (to say nothing about GTA 6's open-world activities)— a seemingly ordinary trip to the coast could put a huge portion of Rockstar's new NPC technology on display, for example. And the aforementioned tech means that, as fans walk along the sand as Jason or Lucia, go for a swim, or otherwise find themselves immersed in a beach stay, they'll be completely populated with unique, individual NPCs.
This tech is immediately noticeable on a beach. A crowd of GTA 6 NPCs won't necessarily consist of people with nearly identical builds wearing slightly different clothes. Instead, Rockstar can populate Vice City's beaches with characters of different heights, body shapes, faces, hairstyles, and clothing, while still allowing them to interact naturally with the environment. Someone lounging on the sand, walking along the water, getting into a vehicle, or interacting with another beachgoer can all be built around a character with different proportions.
Rockstar has described the world of GTA 6 as its "largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex" yet, and the beaches could demonstrate what that actually means better than simply showing the map size of GTA 6. A massive coastline filled with NPCs who look, move, and react differently would make Vice City feel more like a real place, while also giving players another reason to stop during their travels and see what happens around them. For GTA 6, the most impressive part of the beach may ultimately be the people standing on it.
