Introduced officially in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 2, on March 12, 2018, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 15, Gojo Satoru is the face of the entire franchise established by Gege Akutami and also one of the strongest characters to ever exist in the universe. Gojo went on a remarkable run in the story, but his time officially came to an end in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 236, which was released on September 25, 2023, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #43. Since then, Gojo's absence has been felt tremendously by the fans, but in the new era, 68 years after the conclusion of the original story, Japan has now revealed the new Gojo Satoru. This person is none other than Yuji Itadori.
In the modern era of sorcery, Gojo Satoru stood as the absolute strongest, and there is no denying that fact. Gojo was born into one of the Three Big Families in the world of JJK, and through it, he gained access to the powers of the inherited cursed technique known as the Limitless. Gojo was also born with the cursed trait known as the Six Eyes. It is incredibly rare for any member of the Gojo family to be born with both of these powers at once. In fact, the last person to wield both the Limitless and the Six Eyes at the same time was born 400 years before Gojo Satoru, and that just goes to show how rare his powers truly were.
That, when coupled with the fact that Gojo was a born genius, meant that he was already destined to become incredibly powerful. Gojo trained relentlessly over the years and fully mastered the powers of the Limitless, which turned him into the strongest modern sorcerer. His status as the strongest was confirmed in the story on various occasions, such as when he fought and defeated Toji Fushiguro and evolved his usage of the Limitless for the first time.
In the Shinjuku showdown arc, Gojo went against the strongest sorcerer in history, Ryomen Sukuna, and was able to match him in combat, blow for blow. Unfortunately, in the end, Gojo let his guard down, which the King of Curses used as an opportunity to defeat him for good. When Gojo Satoru fell in JJK chapter 236, fans were utterly distraught. Now, 68 years later in the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, his legacy is officially being carried on by his student, Yuji Itadori, who also served as the protagonist of the original story.
"The reason he was cut down was also that he had let his guard down after destroying Mahoraga. By this point, Gojo thought Sukuna no longer had a way to bypass Limitless. Perhaps Gojo, under normal circumstances, would've been able to sense it and narrowly avoid fatality." — Gege Akutami, JJK April 2025 Q&A
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 271, which was officially released on September 30, 2024, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump issue 44, Gojo Satoru entrusted the future to Yuji. Most fans ended the story believing that Yuji continued his legacy. However, in JJK Modulo, which is a sequel story by Gege Akutami, 68 years after the conclusion of the series, it was confirmed to us that Yuji had failed to live up to the task. Yuji Itadori, despite being the strongest, disappeared completely and left Japan wide open to attacks. When the Simurians came, the search for Yuji began, but he was nowhere to be seen.
“Haven't we had enough of Gojo Satoru already? Seek out a different kind of strength than mine. I expect great things from you, Yuji!” — Gojo Satoru to Yuji Itadori, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #271
Later down the line, in JJK Modulo chapter 25, which was officially released on March 9, 2026, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 15, Gege Akutami confirmed to us that Yuji Itadori was done running away from his role. The primary reason why Yuji ran away was the fact that his aging had stopped, and he was unsure of how others around him would react to that. At the same time, Yuji was losing one friend after another, and this loss was too much for him to bear. This is primarily why he isolated himself from all his friends and sorcerer society in general, quitting his job of being a powerful sorcerer for Japan.
