Just over a month ago, it felt like revisiting my adolescence again. This was my opportunity to check out the brand-new Steins;Gate Reboot VN, which wasn't just a cash grab this time since it actually offered a proper amount of new stuff in it. Whether it's a justifiable investment is up to you, but one of my main takeaways is how iconic the series has been for fans, whether they've seen the 2011 show or just played through the OG visual novel.
So, armed with my own expertise, along with a few picks from a couple of my best friends who have worryingly high numbers on their MyAnimeList/Kitsu accounts, the list I've prepared today goes over the best anime to watch if you loved Steins;Gate. These shows promise an equally high-stakes yet methodically paced narrative or presentation, with a sprinkle of sci-fi elements.
Despite having only that many episodes, False Memory has the same feeling as watching a narrative like Steins;Gate slowly peel back its layers. You’re constantly questioning what’s real and how much the characters actually understand about the rabbit hole-esque situation they’ve found themselves in.
It follows a young man named Guan Chao as he searches for a rare energy source to power a time-travel device and return to the past. Besides that, I genuinely can't tell you much more about this show, since the major time-travel element is one of the show's main caveats, but also its main selling point. Needless to say, if you've got an hour or two to spare, then by all means check this show out because you won't even have to commit to a 12-episode binge session for this one.
There's a bit of an inside joke my friends and I often make about Tokyo Revengers. Completely putting that aside, since it's just some friendly banter, it is a surprisingly good show. Beneath the very different settings, both it and Steins;Gate are built around time travel and the desperate desire to change an inevitable outcome you know is coming.
Takemichi and Okabe are (obviously) very different protagonists, but they both get thrown into situations where knowing what’s going to happen doesn’t necessarily make stopping it any easier. In fact, it often makes things more painful, because they have to watch people they care about walk toward tragedies they already know are coming. And honestly, both shows know how to make you care about the characters before ripping your heart out, since Tokyo Revengers builds that same attachment as the Future Gadget Lab gang around Takemichi, Mikey, Draken, Hinata, and the rest.
This next one might seem like an obvious pick, given the DNA they share as part of an interconnected series. Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child are both part of the Science Adventure series, so you’ll recognize that same blend of psychological thriller, science-fiction paranoia, and increasingly ludicrous twists. Plus, this list isn't me restricting you to watch the anime; if you want, by all means go play the Visual Novels instead, which are objectively better.
