A Magic: The Gathering Standard rotation is almost upon us, and a ton of cards will no longer be legal in the format, which will have a big impact on the competitive nature of some popular decks. That being said, with over 5,700 cards being legal by the time we reach February 2027, this rotation feels very much like a requirement to keep the format balanced.
To celebrate the upcoming rotation, we're going to take a look at some of the 1,700+ total cards leaving the Standard format to see which ones we'll miss the most, and which ones we're glad to see the back of ahead of the MTG 2027 calendar.
The following cards are ones that have spent some time in powerful or meta decks, but haven't been as consistently played or as problematic compared to some of the others we'll be highlighting.
The lynchpin win condition for a lot of different Dimir and mono-black builds, Doomsday Excruciator is a card that can reset games out of nowhere and put pressure on both players to finish things up in just a few turns.
When cards rotate out of Standard, it does not impact their legality in other formats.
It's a creature with a ton of nuance to it, as you don't really want to keep it on the board once you cast it, unless you can guarantee ways to force your opponents to draw cards, or know you can get their life total to zero in under three turns.
From one Dimir threat to another, Kaito has been a pain in the side of many a player since it arrived in Duskmourn, and this four-mana hybrid Planeswalker remains a very unique card to this day. It's a creature during your turn provided he has at least one loyalty counter on him, and he has Hexproof, too.
On your opponent's turn, he converts back to a Planeswalker with three cheap but devastating abilities that either give all your Ninjas +1/+1, let you Surveil 2 then draw a card for each opponent who lost life, or tap a target creature while also putting two stun counters on it.
