To commemorate the franchise’s 35th anniversary, Firaxis Games is letting players try Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 for free on Steam until September 10 at 10am PT.
It’s the perfect time to finally revisit Civilization 7 after it was delivered a tactical nuke by the community last year. The game opened to ‘Mostly Negative’ reviews on Steam as players denounced the “unfinished” UI and forced civilization changes, not to mention the $100+ Founders/Deluxe editions that felt like the kind of trade deal Gandhi would make after wiping out half your cities. Even today, over one year later, the game has a long road ahead of it, with ‘Mixed’ reviews at the time of writing.
However, there have been some improvements worth noting for those who avoided the game at launch and haven’t looked back since. Early patches added drag-and-drop mechanics and other quality-of-life touches that were missing on release, while the 1.4.0 Test of Time update finally added back the ability to play as a single Civ throughout a campaign, alongside overhauled victory conditions.
Late July and August a;also brought the 1.4.2 updates, adding more options to negotiate peace deals, improvements to leader relationships, yet again more improvements to the UI, and a slew of bug fixes. Civ 7 is firmly in its Firaxis turnaround era, a series staple at this point.
Like I said, there’s still more to do, but it’s a stark improvement from those ‘Mostly Negative’ beginnings, and should be more familiar to those of us who were stubborn enough to stick with Civ 6.
Harry Alston warned in his review for TheGamer that Civ 7 "is a great game, but some of you might hate it."
Firaxis isn’t done yet either. As stated in the announcement blog for the free week, Civ 7 will make an appearance at PAX West tomorrow, where the team will showcase what’s still in store for the game. If you can’t make it to the Blue Dragon Theater in Seattle, don’t worry, as the whole thing will be livestreamed on YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook.
