The buzzy Bodycam game has recently shared new updates on social media, showcasing a new feature lifted directly from the Metro series of post-apocalyptic action games.
Posting on X, developer Reissad Studio shared footage of a major update to the game’s menu system. Instead of breaking immersion with a full-screen cover, Bodycam will now utilize an in-world tactical tablet which players can use to navigate options, game modes, server browser and social menus. The addition brings even more realism to the game, which, as per Reissad, strives to create unparalleled authenticity in its shooter experience.
The menu is similar to that of the Metro series, which often utilized an in-game clipboard or wristwatch which players could use to check maps, quest info and other information. Seen most recently in Metro Exodus, the diegetic menu style has its fans and detractors, with some enjoying the immersive concept, while others find it difficult to navigate and bemoan the lack of a traditional menu which freezes gameplay.
The lack of real-time pause since Bodycam’s tablet exists inside the 3D world means enemies can shoot and kill you while you’re fiddling around with settings or controls—sure to be controversial. Floating HUDs don’t have the same vulnerabilities, so if you need to answer the door, grab a coffee or use the bathroom, you’re free to do so. But no longer in Bodycam.
The addition of the realistic tablet in conjunction with the game’s unique camera style also shows that indie games like Bodycam are pushing the boundaries of the FPS genre at a somewhat faster pace than legacy AAA franchises like Call of Duty. The desire to innovate, immerse and intrigue players is what pushes creativity in games, and the more fans see of Bodycam’s upcoming update, the more they feel compelled to jump in.
Bodycam has already been labeled one of the most realistic FPS games in recent memory and is attracting fresh attention on social media with viral videos showcasing its gameplay. Fans are praising the game’s realism, but some have also negatively commented, saying that it somewhat crosses the line from entertainment to depraved simulation.
A recent video depicting the game’s trench warfare, due to release in a new September update, causes quite a scene on X. The footage shows the player peeking over the edge of the trench before unloading a barrage of bullets into attacking enemies. The combat then unfolds at close range within the trench and inside the various cabins, showcasing visceral realism that made some social media users writhe in discomfort.
The most popular reply from user Anorak_0x said: “mfers gonna play this for 10hrs per day and then wonder why they have anxiety”. The tweet garnered over 11k likes, showing the similarity of feeling from other viewers. Fellow netizens also asked whether the game could contribute to “horrible mental trauma” or “sleep deprivation” due to its realistic violence. One user went as far as label the game as being able to give players “PTSD from the comfort of your own home."
