The year 2000 marked a rather fascinating time for Spider-Man. It was the year that Sam Raimi was named director of the upcoming live-action Spider-Man film, which was set to star Tobey Maguire. Great news, but that film was two years away at least. Perhaps more considering the troubled history of Spider-Man's journey to the big screen.
In the meantime, Spider-Man was still an absolute star in other mediums. That was especially true in the world of video games, where he had already cultivated an incredible library of interactive titles. And while Sam Raimi being named as the director of a big-budget film adaptation was great news, a Spider-Man video game would fill the gap, and lead to one of the most beloved superhero games ever made.
Dubbed simply Spider-Man, it was a brilliant look at how to bring a superhero to life with limited hardware, but a clear love and passion for the character. That's exactly what the team at Neversoft brought to the table, as they crafted a game built to pay homage to Spider-Man's long-running comic book history, as well as creating a game that was the only way to truly feel like Spider-Man in the year 2000.
Spider-Man made its debut on the PlayStation in August 2000, and it just celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary last year. Over the next year, it would swing onto other platforms, landing on the N64, Dreamcast, PC and Mac. The true story of Spider-Man's development and legacy, however, is one of ambition and a dedicated group of fans that still support it to this day.
Neversoft was announced as developing a Spider-Man game in 1998, which was a bit of a surprise at the time. Surely a talented team, but this was before Tony Hawk's Pro Skater had even come out, which would launch a year later in 1999. It was a testament to the work they did on that game, as their upcoming Spider-Man title would use the same engine as Tony Hawk.
It's strange to think about that, as one is a skateboarding game and the other is a third-person superhero game with swinging and hand-to-hand battles. It was known as the Apocalypse engine, and Neversoft stated that they treated the web-slinging almost like an extension of the skateboarding in the Tony Hawk games.
No matter what magic they used to make it all come together, it worked. It's certainly not as ambitious or big as the swinging would be in later games, but this was the very first Spider-Man game to allow you to swing in a 3D environment. There's something so innately satisfying about the web-slinging in this game, and it's that simplicity that helps maintain that charm.
