At the beginning of Black Clover, we were introduced to the Wizard King — a legendary position that only the most powerful can hold in the Clover Kingdom. The Wizard King acts as the most powerful mage around, with great authority, commanding the Magic Knight squads of the Kingdom at will.
When Black Clover first began, we were introduced to the reigning 28th Wizard King, that being Julius Novachrono. As the story progressed, it became apparent that Julius was a major antagonist that our main characters had to overcome. The battle against Julius and Lucius was iconic, and through the newest guidebook release on August 4, 2026, called Perfect Grimoire, Yuki Tabata officially revealed the strongest Wizard King Magic of all time, that is, Soul Magic.
The Wizard King is an extremely important figure in the world of Black Clover. The concept of the Wizard King was first introduced in the very beginning of the series, in Black Clover Chapter 1, released in 2015, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #12. Since the beginning of the story, it has been Asta and Yuno's main ambition to acquire this title. But, for the majority of the Black Clover story, the reigning Wizard King was none other than Julius Novachrono, the 28th person to hold this title. Julius had everyone stumped, as we were all under the impression that his real magic attribute was Time magic. After all, that seemed like his signature magic that he always utilized in battle or even outside of it.
However, in the Black Clover manga, it was confirmed that Time magic is an artificial magic attribute. Julius was thus able to use Time Magic through Lucius’s Contract with the supreme Devil Astaroth. Because of that, many fans were left confused about what Julius's, and in turn Lucius's, real magic attributes were. Luckily for fans, on August 4, 2026, with the release of Perfect Grimoire, Yuki Tabata shed light on this question. Yuki Tabata went on to reveal that the 28th Wizard King's natural magic attribute was Soul Magic, and in retrospect, it does make sense. This is because Julius and Lucius were naturally born into one body, unimpacted by any outside or artificial spell that could have caused their two souls to inhabit the same magic. While it isn't explicitly stated, their birth condition stemmed from Soul Magic, which they both have as their natural attribute. Previously, many fans believed Soul Magic to only be Lucius’s skill, so it’s great to see Tabata reveal the true lore behind their powers.
The world of Black Clover is filled with a wide array of diverse magic attributes that one can be born with. Soul Magic, however, is quite special and definitely one of the rarest out there. In the world of Black Clover, only Julius and Lucius are known to harbor this overpowered attribute, and undoubtedly, they know how to use it to its full potential. In the Black Clover world, Soul Magic has proven to be an overpowered ability that can bring a whole kingdom to its knees. Julius is mostly used to the Time magic granted by Astaroth, but through Lucius' battles as the dominant soul, we also know the powers derived from the Soul Magic attribute.
In simple terms, Soul Magic, as the name implies, grants its user dominion over souls. In the world of Black Clover, this kind of power cannot be underestimated, as the soul is the origin of all life. Even magic originates from the soul itself. Thus, by controlling the soul itself, Julius and Lucius can alter a being entirely. By changing the soul, they can change the person's personality, beliefs, and ideologies and turn them into a completely different person. This power was used against Julius himself by the other soul hosting his body, Lucius. For years, Julius did not even know of his true attribute. He genuinely believed his real magic was Time magic, and everything he did was through secret manipulation by Lucius through the use of Soul Magic.
In the final stretch of Black Clover, we also saw Soul Magic’s overpowered healing and resurrecting abilities. After absorbing his siblings' blood, body, and bone magic, Lucius and Julius are granted healing powers that can not just regenerate limbs, but also bring back the dead themselves. Combined with the innate power of Soul Magic, he can then rewrite the souls of the dead and make them into his powerful Paladins.
