If you've been clinging on to hope that the rumors of a third game in the acclaimed Ori series are true, well... You might either want to cling harder or let go altogether, depending on how well you take bad news.
In a couple of Tweets posted earlier today, the director of both games and the current Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler clarified that these rumors were false. But not due to a lack of trying on his or his studio's end, as reported by Insider Gaming.
These rumors began, as many of these rumors tend to do, on the ResetEra forums. Word had it that a studio under the Saber Interactive umbrella was tapped to make a new game in the series. Furthermore, it was suggested that this very game could very well be announced at the upcoming Gamescom event in Germany this month. Well, when word of that got around to Mahler, he had a thing or two to say about it.
His first post on X (formerly Twitter) put the kibosh on those rumors, while also revealing that his studio was, in fact, talking behind the scenes about buying back the rights to the IP. He began by explaining his theory as to why Xbox management wouldn't let anyone other than the original studio handle a new entry.
"I think after having put billions into 343 [Studios, now Halso Studios] to handle Halo and not being able to recapture the old magic," Mahler explained in his Tweet, "I’d guess that by now [that Microsoft] has learned their lesson that the right talent needs to work on those [IPs], otherwise you’ll undoubtedly get more slop." Because of this, he went on, Moon Studios had, internally, been discussing buying the property back, "so it makes sense for this one to come home to Moon!"
The Tweet had Mahler reaffirming the negativity of the rumor, while still teasing fans a bit.
"I can confirm that the Ori 3 rumors are nonsense," he stated, "That said, I had Gareth [Coker, composer for the two Ori games as well as Moon's latest, No Rest for the Wicked] over for dinner a while ago since he was recording [the NRFTW soundtrack] in Vienna, and even he asked me if we'd be ready to do another one. 'It's time', he said!"
