Grand Theft Auto 6’s recent gameplay showcase gave us our best look yet at Jason, but it seems like a lot of fans really aren’t into him.
You might remember all the way back when Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced, fans really weren’t happy with beloved protagonist John Marston being replaced with gruff, generic cowboy Arthur Morgan. Everyone was sure that Arthur would be a total downgrade from John and nowhere near as beloved as who many consider to be Rockstar’s best lead.
Of course, as we all know, that’s not what ended up happening at all. Arthur’s charm, depth, and loyalty quickly cemented him as one of gaming’s all-time best protagonists, making all of the early complaints and worries seem more than a little silly. That lesson on judging a book by its cover clearly hasn’t been learned, as GTA 6’s Jason is now the one in the hot seat.
Earlier this week, Rockstar finally pulled back the curtain on GTA 6 with a massive extended look deep dive. Not only did this give us our first proper glimpse into how the game is going to play, but it also showed more of Jason and Lucia than we’d ever seen before. While Lucia has become an instant hit with fans, everyone has been a lot more critical of Mr Duval.
Reactions to Jason have been a lot more mixed than I expected since the Extended Look debuted a few days ago, and they’re headlined by one common complaint - his voice. GTA fans are widely criticising Jason’s performance for lacking emotion compared to Lucia’s, and suggesting that it sounds like he’s mumbling or has something in his mouth.
Some even think that whoever’s playing Jason is trying to emulate Arthur’s more stoic performance, which probably won’t help the comparisons between the two.
Others think that Jason is too “boring” and “laid back” for a GTA protagonist from what we’ve seen so far, since he doesn’t seem that bothered by what he’s getting into. As if this situation couldn’t be any more similar to the backlash Arthur got, this response is entirely based on what Rockstar has chosen to show us with pre-release footage.
While I do understand where the complaints are coming from, Rockstar fans really should look back on how we all felt about Arthur before actually playing Red Dead Redemption 2. Even if you’re somehow already certain that Jason is going to be a letdown, have some faith in what Rockstar’s been cooking for well over a decade.
