Any debate surrounding the best anime of all time will attract plenty of controversy, as people have their own opinions and biases towards their favorite series. One Piece seems to always appear in these discussions, though there are still many fans who believe that there are better franchises.
However, one thing that can't be denied is the fact that Luffy's adventure arguably has some of the greatest world-building of any fictional series, with Oda going out of his way to build one of the most expansive and detailed worlds of all time. However, there are some anime franchises that many feel can rival One Piece in this aspect.
Though some may scoff at first glance, the world-building of the Naruto franchise is actually quite substantial. Though the focus of the series is placed on its epic battles and lengthy main story, Konoha and its surrounding lands are all exquisitely detailed, each coming with its own cultures, traditions, practices, and histories.
For the most part, the world of Naruto is shaped by legendary figures, and historical titans such as Madara and Hashirama are spoken of in great detail. In the latter parts of Shippuden, the history of the world and Chakra itself were further elaborated upon with the introduction of Kaguya and the recurring spirits of her grandsons, Indra and Ashura. Because of this, Naruto's world building is quite engaging.
Made in Abyss is a story that initially seems harmless and cute, only to be revealed as utterly horrifying the more its layers are peeled back. In terms of mystery, dark undertones, and heavy symbolism, there are relatively few anime that can top Made in Abyss.
The entire story revolves around a massive hole that extends down almost infinitely and is made up of various layers, each of which get progressively more difficult to traverse. With each layer, there are distinct cultures, wildlife, environments, relics, and even new rules, keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat at all times.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a franchise that often finds itself at the top of the anime rankings, and there are many reasons for this, ranging from its incredible storytelling to its unforgettable characters. However, at the heart of this series is a truly dynamic world that hooks viewers in from the very first episode.
This world is one that really feels lived-in in a way that most aren't, since it goes into the many details surrounding its shady underworld and how its society is maintained. The main reason it works so well is due to the cohesion of every individual factor, with many militaries, groups, and foundations all vying for power, and behind it all is an intense metaphysical realm where everything is possible.
