The PS2, when you look back at it, is a completely bizarre system with some truly out-there experiences that we've honestly missed out a bit on in recent years. There was no agreed-upon "right or wrong" when it comes to how to go about certain genres, and the JRPG was one of those genres for sure.
There were wild experiments all over the place, but perhaps the best part of those is the JRPG, which puts you in the position of a more villainous character than usual.
We're going to check out some PS2 JRPGs where you are the bad guy.
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a game where you play as Laharl, who is working towards the goal of becoming the new overlord of hell. The funny thing here is he's kind of a comedic type of evil. He's dying to be the worst, and yet he never really reaches that level.
He's the villain in any other story, dying for people to fear him, treating people like crap, and being selfish and hating anyone who shows the slightest bit of weakness. He's your typical JRPG villain, except here, the story is in hell, so he's got company. It's a really cool way to go about a game story, and it's one of the biggest reasons this title became a long-running franchise that still receives entries till this day.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is a really strange and depressing entry in a series that is full of stories of that variety. However, the post-apocalyptic life is not all bad, at least not for you. See, you're a demi-fiend, and that gives you some unique abilities and options in terms of what kind of story you want to tell. You can certainly go the benevolent route and rebel against the would-be recreators of the world, or you can go the true demon route, turning the world into something far darker than it ever was in the first place.
