Not a great way to start its life cycle.
WARDOGS is one of the best FPS games I’ve played in a very long time. And a lot of folks seem to agree with me. The game opened its launch day with over 300,000 concurrent players on Steam, but trouble quickly ensued as low server capacity rendered it unplayable for a very large chunk of its audience.
And that would be a problem for many, but not so much as to lead them to spill their vitriol all over the Steam reviews page, were it not for the fact that streamers, apparently, got fast-tracked ahead of queues. As such, streamers were allowed to skip queues entirely and play the game to market it to their audiences, while paying customers were stuck waiting for a good while before they were allowed into the main menu.
And then met with full servers that had no way of hosting them anyway.
So not only did streamers get to enter the game ahead of everyone else, but by being quick to join, they also easily joined the available servers, which actual customers were basically blocked from until server capacity was eventually increased. And that pissed a lot of people off, with WARDOGS earning “mixed” reviews on Valve’s storefront.
Things are slowly changing, though. As players get into the title and actually start playing the game, many are changing their negative reviews to positive, though there is another growing community of unhappy players who’re now locked out of the game entirely.
The reason is that WARDOGS suddenly shifted to Elytra anti-cheat, which, as you may know, does not run on Linux. Players on Linux using Proton to launch Windows titles are entirely unable to play WARDOGS at the moment, but the developers are apparently working on a fix. The negative reviews from those folks are piling up, though.
At any rate, I wholeheartedly believe WARDOGS will bounce back. It’s one of the most refreshing shooter experiences I’ve had in recent memory, and definitely a title I will actively be coming back to.
