Rockstar Issues New Official Statement on GTA 6's World

Rockstar has confirmed a major detail about the world of Leonida, the Florida-inspired state that serves as background and context to the Miami-inspired Vice City in Grand Theft Auto 6. Indeed, many fans have been excited to see how GTA 6 would tell its own story while also making the most of "Florida Man" memes, but that doesn't mean everyone is happy about it. Miami Police tried to resist the city of Miami and GTA 6 having a marketing partnership.

While it seems that is going ahead, it's worth noting that gaming has come a long way, and even Rockstar Games has come a long way since its last major GTA game, Grand Theft Auto 5. Vice City is not literally Miami, but GTA 6's recreation already seems like one of the best depictions of the city in gaming, if not one of the best depictions of any "city" in gaming. And that's not without blood, sweat, and tears, according to Rockstar Games' studio head Rob Nelson.

Never one to rest on its laurels, Rockstar Games wanted to take the open world of Red Dead Redemption 2 and push it further, which is remarkable given that Red Dead 2 is a 2018 game that still beats many 2026 games in the graphics/living world aspects. In a statement to IGN, Nelson said, “I think, with Red Dead Redemption 2, we finally had the team and the tech and then took the time we needed to push the idea of making a fully realized, consistent-feeling world further than we ever had." He explained the team took the time necessary to maximize that gen of hardware to get the most of its open world, its core design, and its general gameplay, and that GTA 6 is a continuation of that approach:

"GTA 6 is a continuation of our team pushing in this direction: doing everything we possibly can to create the largest, deepest, most densely populated, and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in."

In other words, in terms of game development and design, Grand Theft Auto 6 is as much of a sequel to Red Dead 2 as it is to GTA 5. It is a Rockstar sequel to all it's accomplished before, and that's still obvious in many ways. From Jason's Dead Eye ability in GTA 6 to the way it approaches "creature collecting," GTA 6 borrows a lot from Red Dead 2 and expands on those core features (in the context of Vice City).

The biggest difference is that GTA 6 is being built around a world that can support an even greater level of density and complexity. Rockstar's description specifically points to population as an area it has pushed to improve, but not in the context of a large open-world game that is mostly empty space. No, GTA 6 is made to feel more alive than any Rockstar game prior, meaning Vice City's beaches ought to be heavily populated.
