Marvel's Wolverine Community Director Defends Fart Gas Controversy

Marvel’s Wolverine’s controversial scent trail (also known as the “fart gas trail”) has been explained and defended by Insomniac Games’ community director.

If you were looking forward to Marvel’s Wolverine, then it’s probably been a bit of a rough 24 hours for you. Reviews for PlayStation’s biggest game in years went live yesterday, and it’s fair to say that they were more than a little disappointing with a 78 on Metacritic. That’s by no means a bad score, but it’s not quite what everyone was expecting.

Now’s a good time to say I reviewed Marvel’s Wolverine and came away much more positively than some, even if I agree there are some flaws.

Since the reviews dropped, one of the biggest points of contention has been the handholding nature of Wolverine’s scent trail, which causes a blue smell line (now dubbed the “fart gas trail) to appear and guide the player to main objectives and collectibles. The discourse has gotten so loud that Insomniac’s community director has now spoken out about it.

Over on Twitter, someone tagged Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson and asked them if the scent trail can be turned off since it doesn’t need to be “on at all times”. In response, Stevenson pointed out that the scent trail isn’t always on and explained that it “represents Logan’s canon mutant super senses and elite tracking ability”.

Stevenson went on to say that the scent trail only appears when Logan is tracking a “specific scent/sound” for story moments or when he “catches whiff of a collectible”. When replying to another comment, Stevenson said that you have to get close enough to a collectible in the first place to pick up the sound or scent.

The scent trail isn’t that much of a bother for main objectives as it’s basically just a different take on a marker, but it does go a little far with collectibles in my opinion.

Interestingly, this is the first official response we’ve had from any Insomniac Games member since Wolverine reviews dropped yesterday. While Stevenson is right to point out that it’s not always on, as many are misconstruing, I can’t imagine that the toxic atmosphere surrounding the game right now is going to take a genuine response well.
