A return to Silent Hill could be on the cards following the huge success of Zach Cregger’s recent Resident Evil outing, according to a new report.
DreadCentral have shared that Konami is weighing up potential Hollywood partners to reboot their famed fog-drenched horror franchise, opting for a complete overhaul of the Silent Hill film franchise that starts fresh and begins a new continuity.
Details are scarce, but Konami execs are reportedly green with envy that Capcom’s Resident Evil has hit such a home run in theaters with Cregger’s fresh take on the survival horror mainstay and want to emulate the same success with their own iconic franchise. With new Silent Hill stories launching in the past couple of years, like the well-received, Scotland-set Silent Hill: Townfall, the source material is definitely there.
Previous outings for Silent Hill have been serious box office bombs, often receiving scathing reviews for their lack of a compelling story or good quality scares. It’s not hard to emulate the look of Silent Hill—just get the biggest fog machine you can find and put it on full blast—but long-time fans of the franchise have complained that the films can’t match the haunting dread found in the games.

The most recent Silent Hill film, titled Return to Silent Hill, released earlier this year and saw Christoper Gans return to the director’s chair after helming the first Silent Hill film all the way back in 2006. The film retold the story of Silent Hill 2, featuring iconic characters like James Sunderland, Eddie and Laura appearing, but fan and critic response was not good—reviews likened it to a cheap attempt at cosplay and described it as “visually tacky”.
On the flip side, horror auteur Cregger’s Resident Evil was a surprise hit for Capcom and Hollywood studio Columbia Pictures, which had production assistance from PlayStation Studios. It raked in over $100m worldwide in its opening weekend alone, setting a new record from the film franchise that was previously fronted by Milla Jovovich. It also became one of the highest rated movies of the year, with strong critic and audience scores above the 90th percentile on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Cregger developing his Resident Evil film, as he faced unprecedented fan backlash for what they perceived as wrong or misguided creative decisions. Players complained constantly on social media about casting, the story direction and the lack of a true Resident Evil atmosphere—all before even seeing the film, mind you.
