Out of all the games shown at the latest State of Play, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is by far one of the most exciting titles to look forward to in the new year. Despite promising to be one of the most ambitious entries in the entire remake trilogy, which we saw a few glimpses of in its release date trailer, a recent announcement has fans up in arms over its physical release changes.
Despite one of the biggest selling points of the previous Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being that it included two whole discs to fit the massive open-world RPG, the third and final entry in the trilogy is reportedly ditching the concept entirely.
As noted by Wario64 on X, the store page for the upcoming release notes that all retail versions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will require a mandatory digital download to access the full game, meaning the third entry in the remake trilogy is entirely unplayable without an internet connection.
Although Final Fantasy 7's director previously warned that it wasn't guaranteed for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to get a fully physical release, the news still comes as a major blow for fans that were hoping to at least have the final entry in the trilogy available as a fully offline release to finish off the collection.
This isn't to say that the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation disc is completely useless, as it will still knock off some of the 130GB download to prevent players from needing to install the entire game from scratch, while letting you play offline once the mandatory update is installed.
Even with the silver lining of being able to play offline after you've installed the full game, fans have still been outraged over the announcement, considering this is likely the last Final Fantasy game to release before PlayStation pulls the plug on physical disc releases entirely.
With countless concerns over game preservation and frustration at going back on the highly praised decisions of its predecessors, players have even been canceling their orders of the recently announced collector's edition of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation as a result of the change.
While Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will likely be another major hit for Square Enix if the sales of its predecessors are anything to go by, the announcement of the mandatory download has been a major blow to the excitement for many players already, especially when games like Final Fantasy 16 had day-one patches that you could still play without needing to download.
