A Ravenloft D&D Series Is Officially Coming To Netflix

Ravenloft has been a huge part of Dungeons & Dragons lore since the early '80s, but with the new Horrors Within sourcebook released earlier this year, it's back at the forefront of players' minds, and this newfound excitement has caught the attention of streaming giant Netflix, who have reportedly shelved one D&D project in favor of a new Ravenloft live-action series.

This report comes from Deadline, who claim that the project already has two huge names attached in the writer and executive producer roles.

The two names linked to the project at this stage are writer and executive producer John August, and executive producer Alfonso Cuarón. August has previously worked as a writer on titles such as Frankenweenie, Dark Shadows, Big Fish, and Corpse Bride, while Cuarón is well known for writing Gravity, Children of Men, and Y tu mama tambien, while also directing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Few other details are known, but based on these two names attached to the project this early on, it's a show of intent from Wizards of the Coast and its owner, Hasbro, that any adaptation will be taken seriously and not become a heartless cash grab.

This is perhaps why the Forgotten Realms project that was previously in development at Netflix has reportedly been canceled in favor of this new Ravenloft concept.

Among the details Deadline has revealed is a general idea of the story that this Ravenloft series will follow.

"(A) prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance, Ravenloft and its Domains of Dread redefine adventure through character-driven stories of dark magic and supernatural intrigue. At the heart of the series, Ravenloft follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains.”

Strahd von Zarovich is the OG Darklord of Ravenloft, and if you've ever played the tabletop game, you've likely seen images of him or even encountered him in a campaign or two. A murderous brute who will take out whoever stands in his way, even if it's his own family, Zarovich is a very interesting character who is unquestionably a villain, but it will be interesting to see how his origin story is handled if that is the direction this new story takes.
