Celebrated gaming anniversaries have become more and more common as legacy series last longer and stay relevant. Whether it's individual releases that get constant support or a series with half a dozen entries, it's always nice to see an IP celebrate milestones, even more so when fans of the series get a little stocking stuffer as thanks, too.
Fittingly, the Ghost Recon subseries of Tom Clancy games hit its 25th anniversary earlier this month, and fans of the most recent entry, Breakpoint, have been waiting for an in-game celebration with bated breath. As the month draws to a close, Ubisoft has finally delivered on the content which was (somewhat prematurely) announced almost a month ago.
Fans of Ghost Recon Breakpoint have been eagerly awaiting the actual content of the 25th anniversary since a Ubisoft broadcast back in August discussed the celebration, only fully revealed officially now. "Officially" is the important word there, as the release video was actually mistakenly posted a little under a month ago, both canceling out any anticipation and leading fans to wonder what the wait was even for.
The actual contents of the free 25th anniversary bundle are a series of cosmetics alluding to previous Ghost Recon titles, including masks, weapon skins, and vehicle cosmetics for both cars and helicopters. A few fans decried the lack of true playable content, but the clear love for the series comes through the sheer variety of cosmetics on offer.
An absolute buzzer-beater release, fans were worried Ubisoft would actually miss the celebratory window as September draws to a close. Luckily, the full bundle is available now in Ghost Recon Breakpoint's shop. It's always nice to see a series throw some love back to the titles that got it to where it is now, and Ubisoft have done a solid job celebrating the history of Ghost Recon, even if it's only through skins.
Breakpoint isn't the only Ghost Recon title getting some love for the series' 25th anniversary, as Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands is also getting its own celebration update, including quality of life performance features and a new mission alongside a returning favorite in the long-missing Predator mission.
Ubisoft is clearly eager to celebrate the parts of modern Ghost Recon the fans love, and have used the opportunity to tease future installments of the franchise while harkening back to the games' golden age, all the while taking another pass to ensure plenty of features fans have come to love in Breakpoint are added retroactively to Wildlands.
Smoother performance, better customization – Ubisoft have taken steps few developers do, ensuring the longevity of previous entries while still arming the franchise for the future, playing double duty with both Wildlands and Breakpoint in celebration, even if one clearly got a bit more love.
