In this day and age, I guess it really shouldn’t be especially surprising that a new game from FromSoftware is a hot-button topic. Even back when Elden Ring Nightreign was announced and people were skeptical about its pseudo-battle royale multiplayer format, it didn’t stop an outpouring of applicants for the game’s initial test runs last year, nor its success at full launch.
While FromSoft’s pedigree does carry a natural disposition toward success, there were factors against the recent network test for its newest multiplayer endeavor, The Duskbloods, chief among them being its exclusivity to the Nintendo Switch 2.
However, it seems that once again, nothing can stand in FromSoft’s way, because as its staff tells it, not only was the first network test for The Duskbloods a rousing success, it actually managed to draw more applicants than Elden Ring Nightreign did.
Whether or not that’s proof positive that the game will be another slam dunk remains to be seen, but if nothing else, it’s clear that the obstacle of platform exclusivity is no obstacle at all to fans of Soulslikes. Either that, or the initial announcement that The Duskbloods would be Switch 2-exclusive got a lot of people to buy the console.
In an August 22 livestream hosted by Famitsu, later translated by GamesRadar, FromSoftware producer Yasuhiro Kitao spoke about the overwhelming response from the playing public to the Duskbloods network test that ran from August 21 to August 24. As Kitao tells it, the first network test for The Duskbloods drew in even more applicants than those who applied to the network tests for Elden Ring Nightrein in May 2025.
“We were really surprised,” Kitao said during the stream. Kitao didn’t provide any hard numbers for the number of applicants for the Duskbloods network test, nor are there any player counts available for the Nightreign tests, though Bandai Namco did release a little infographic after the Nightreign test with some miscellaneous stats like the number of runes lost and the number of times players summoned Spectral Hawks.
